Graduate Writing Consultants
The Center for Excellence in Writing and Communication (the Writing Center) is currently accepting applications for three graduate student positions as Graduate Writing Consultants. The application deadline is Friday, May 20 by 5 pm.
These positions are staffed on a yearly basis to support and provide feedback to fellow graduate students. Generally, Consultants are appointed to 50% Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) positions that cover tuition and fees and provide a stipend generally comparable to a 50% TAship. While it is ideal for Graduate Writing Consultants to work at least the full academic year (fall through spring) when hired, we understand that graduate students receive a number of competitive opportunities and will keep a ‘shortlist’ of approved applicants in case positions open up on short notice. Currently, the CEWC plans to hire two Graduate Writing Consultants over the summer and three from fall through spring quarter.
Duties for the position include:
-
-
- Providing approximately 14 hours per week of one-on-one writing tutorials with graduate students
- Coordinating and running 2 hours of graduate writing groups per week
- At set points in the quarter, GWCs’ remaining hours are committed to helping run Dissertation/Theses Boot Camps, intended to be spaces where graduates produce substantive work on their long-term, culminating projects. The CEWC hosts 3-4 boot camps per year, roughly one each quarter
-
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
-
-
- At least one year of prior teaching or tutoring experience
- Excellent communication skills
- The ability to work collaboratively
-
Candidates must be in good academic standing. The Center serves writers with diverse cultural, academic, and linguistic backgrounds, and we are always seeking candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
-
-
- Science, technical, business, and/or legal writing
- Grant writing
- Multilingual writing
- Multimedia/multimodal composing and/or online writing instruction
- Supporting students from underrepresented and minority groups, adult learners, and/or students with disabilities

Writing Center Administration Fellows
The Center for Excellence in Writing and Communication (the CEWC, also called the Writing Center) is currently accepting applications for a Writing Center Administrative Fellow for the academic year, plus summer (pending funding confirmation), 2022-2023. The application is open to currently enrolled graduate students, with a deadline of Friday, May 20 by 5 pm.
General Application Process:
The Writing Center Administrative Fellow provides a quarterly stipend of up to $5000, and is renewable across the full academic year of 2022-2023, including the summer of 2022 (pending funding confirmation). This Fellow position is held in addition to any TAship or GSR positions graduate students have, as it does not provide tuition remission or cover fees. If chosen, candidates will ideally commit to the fellowship until the end of Spring Quarter, 2023. The Writing Center Administrative Fellow is a flexible program, with the stipend scaling from a minimum of 10 hours of project time for roughly $2500 per quarter, all the way up to a maximum of 20 project hours for $5000 per quarter.
Being a Fellow generally involves assisting the directors with aspects of writing center administration, writing center assessment/research, and writing/communicating across the curriculum and/or writing/communicating in the disciplines initiatives (WAC/WID). Projects might include assisting the Faculty Director and Associate Director with helping develop and maintain the CEWC website, supporting and mentoring undergraduate peer tutors, participating in projects and programming supporting writing and communication instruction on the UCI campus, and—depending upon background and interests—collaborating with the Associate Director on research projects for the CEWC. Additional projects may include creating and facilitating in-class presentations and special topic workshops, drafting handouts and other resources, and representing the Center at events like the Anteater Involvement Fairs.
